The Problem

After Luna Design Group created a screened porch for radio personality John Garabedian’s new Falmouth vacation home, the owner realized his primary residence in Southborough was lacking a similarly relaxing retreat.

The Solution

Principal Joseph Luna got to work on plans for an addition to Garabedian’s home in the ’burbs, envisioning a polished sunroom that the Open House Party host could use in all four seasons. Connected to the back of the home via a wooden bridge, the raised structure features air conditioning as well as French doors that open to a Juliet balcony to let in cool spring breezes. Meanwhile, a gas stove and insulated ceilings keep the space warm when Garabedian cozies up with a book or entertains friends in wintertime. For added visual interest, Luna outfitted the cathedral ceilings with fir beadboard paneling to create an intricate stripe pattern. “We wanted a natural but refined interior,” the architect says. “We call it a treehouse, even though it’s not actually built into a tree.”
