When two anesthesiologists who met while living in Paris decided to pack their bags and relocate from Hungary to Worcester, they wanted to recreate the look and feel of the 18th-century architecture they admired so much in France. So they embarked on building a grand home in Worcester’s affluent Westwood Hills neighborhood, drawing inspiration from both the Place des Vosges and the Palace of Versailles. The end result? A dwelling fit for royalty.
From the street, the three-story chateau—completed in 2001—is hard to miss. Clad in brick and stone, it’s surrounded by half an acre of land, dotted with formal hedging, fruit trees, statues, a cherub fountain, and a patio. A widow’s walk at the top of the house, meanwhile, offers homeowners views of the entire kingdom, er, city of Worcester.
Step inside, and the luxury continues. You’ll be met in the foyer with 34-foot domed ceilings, marble checkerboard floors, a grand-entrance-worthy staircase, and glimmering mirrored doors. Deeper inside the house, you’ll pass through room after room adorned with Swarovski crystal chandeliers and intricate gold-leaf detailing—all guaranteed to make you feel instantly underdressed for the occasion. The office, which is based on King Louis XVI’s own library at Versailles, is no exception; the room features a fireplace (one of four throughout the home), floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves, a reading nook, and a spiral wooden staircase leading to the master suite on the second floor. There, a two-room retreat awaits with a private bathroom offering amenities such as a double vanity, a jetted tub, and a bidet.
That’s not the only place to indulge in a bit of pampering, though. The chateau also boasts a more casual subterranean spa, which is equipped with a heated indoor lap pool, a marble steam sauna, and a cedar-dry sauna. Because of course, even the most elegant among us needs to kick back every once in a while.
