The Problem

Plans for a couple’s sprawling ACK estate included everything they’d ever dreamed of—except a central outdoor space where they could gather with their children and grandchildren on warm summer days.

The Solution

Bob Paladino of Mellowes & Paladino Architects, the Hopkinton-based firm the pair tasked with designing the vast property, developed a versatile pool area good for a lot more than swimming. At 2,100 square feet, a guesthouse encompasses two garages, a living room, a kitchen, three bathrooms, and two bedrooms. There, visiting family members can stay close to the action while gazing out across the pool to a pergola-covered lounge, which lies between two pool houses—one with a changing room, a bathroom, and a kitchenette, and the other featuring a living area with double doors that open so the television can be viewed from outside. “It’s a place they can gather and hang out in a casual way,” project manager Emily Coutu explains. “They have everything they need there.”
