It’s fitting that this co-op is reserved for practicing visual artists, because the loft itself is an artful collage of materials—from the purple paint and original maple floors, to the unfinished wood and sheet metal. At almost 1,500 square feet, the digs are spacious, and feel even more so due to a reflective, curved metal wall that divides the main living space into two sections: a living and dining room, and an art studio. In both areas, you’ll find 12-plus-foot ceilings, whitewashed brick walls, and tall windows that have stuck around since the building’s days as a wool warehouse, built back in 1898.

Any art that you make on the workshop side, you can handily display in the den using the picture rail mounted along the wall, or on top of the solid black cherry shelves in the den or lofted bedroom. Once open to the level below on two sides, the current owners came up with a creative solution to seal off the chamber in an enchanting way, without spoiling the loft’s open appearance: They installed several openable windows, salvaged from a demolished apartment building in Cambridge.

Plod back down the short set of metal steps to get some work done in the home office (which can easily double as a bookish guest bedroom), or check out the futuristic bathroom. Sheets of zinc metal cover the walls, nickel tiles the shower, and metal grating clings to the ceiling, overlit by blue light. It’s the kind of inventive design that proves this entire loft—going for a cool $245,000—is really just one giant canvas in an artist’s hands.
