425 Ocean Ave., Marblehead
Size: 4,530 square feet
If you liked the last Marblehead bungalow we featured but the square footage wasn’t quite to your preference, here’s a seaside residence that’s sure to strike your fancy. Approaching the property, it’s impossible not to take a moment to ooh and aah over the completely unhampered ocean outlooks. For even more heightened views, take to the home’s most eye-catching feature: A stone-clad observation tower—designed by architect Erling Falck to look like a lighthouse—stands tall between the dwelling’s two wings. Meander up its spiral staircase to arrive at the wraparound balcony up top.
Even the parts of the home that aren’t strictly dedicated to sea-gazing are seamlessly shaped by the cerulean surroundings. In the living room, for example, barrel vaulted ceilings and an abundance of artfully placed windows give off a yacht-like feel. Connecting the great room to the kitchen is a curved, stone fireplace built by Martha’s Vineyard-based designer Lew French. A pass-through window made with Cape Cod rocks links the fireplaced living room to the kitchen, which boasts Sub-Zero and JennAir appliances, and cherry wood cabinetry painted a warm gray. To top off the walk-along-the-beach vibe, a giant driftwood branch extends from floor to ceiling by the entrance of the kitchen as if it’s growing out of house itself.
While the entire place is rife with similarly glorious details—the interior balcony overlooking the living room, the basswood vaulted ceilings in the master bedroom, the glass-ceilinged home gym—the indoor heated in-ground pool is a standout. A sandstone patio, embedded with million-year-old fossils, frames the rectangular basin, and another Lew French masterpiece installed by the poolside means you can swim laps to the tune of a crackling fire.
