When it Comes to Restaurants, Somerville is So Hot Right Now
Per a post on Craigslist over the weekend, an “eclectic, music/dance’ oriented café,” appropriately dubbed Cafe Tango, will be bringing coffee, panini, and crepes to Bow Street in Somerville. While it’s not the most monumental of openings, it’s still notable for its chosen location—quite simply because it’s yet another place that’s decided to make Somerville its home.
Last week, Eater Boston announced that M.F. Dulock Pasture-Raised Meats, from the owner of Concord Prime & Fish in Concord, would be setting up shop in the Highland Ave. space formerly occupied by The Chocolate Tarte; The Bearded Pig, a Somerville-based BBQ catering company, has plans to go brick and mortar with a Union Square eatery this summer. And starting in June, Thursday evenings will bring the Swirl & Slice market, which will showcase local gourmet products and vino. Add all of this to The Painted Burro, Casa B, and Backbar, and you’ve got a thriving new food scene in addition to already established stars of the area like Bergamot, Posto, and Highland Kitchen. Unfortunately, all of this new development may have been too much competition for Union Square’s Ronnarong Thai Tapas Bar, which, according to Grub Street, will be closing soon.
Nonetheless, the changes are for the most part incredibly exciting for hungry Somerville residents. Back in February, we anointed Kendall Square as the new dining neighborhood success story thanks to openings like Catalyst, Area Four, Abigail’s, Kika Tapas, and Firebrand Saints. Is Somerville its successor? While the area certainly had more to start with, it’s shaping up to be one of the best and brightest culinary destinations in town.
