Welcome to Best of the Day, our daily recommendation for what to check out around town. If you do one thing in Boston today, consider this.

Pity the calves of the culinary world—not the veal kind, but the fleshy-back-of-the-leg kind. Just think of the injustices cooks’ calves suffer: smothered in chef’s whites, strained by long hours of standing, seared by hot stoves, occasionally spattered by burning hot liquids. But today, these calves may roam free, as the 18th annual Chefs in Shorts event returns to the World Trade Center.

For this outdoor grilling event, Boston chefs flock to the Seaport for a lavish barbecue, complete with beer, wine, and dessert—all to benefit local nonprofit Future Chefs, which helps guide urban teens into careers in the restaurant industry. Participating talent for this grill-off includes Chris Douglass (Ashmont Grill and Tavolo), Patrick Campbell (Café ArtScience), Rodney Murillo (Davio’s), Cyrus Winter (Earls Kitchen + Bar), Mark Gaier and Clark Fraiser (M.C. Spiedo), Brian Poe and Douglas Rodrigues (Tip Tap Room), Suzi Maitland (Trina’s Starlite Lounge), and many, many more.

So head down to the waterfront tonight, to marvel at the culinary prowess—and shapely calves—on display.

$80, June 19, 7-9:30 p.m., Seaport World Trade Center, 200 Seaport Boulevard, Boston, chefsinshorts.eventbrite.com.
