Dosa-N-Curry Reopens Six Months After Utility Problems Forced its Closure

The vegetarian fusion restaurant, located next door to the late A4 Pizza, closed abruptly in August after an underground fire.

Savory dosa, uthappam, and vegetarian masala, vindaloo, and makhni are finally available again from a little storefront at 447 Somerville Ave. Dosa-n-Curry reopened for business on Sunday, January 24, nearly six months after an Eversource utility issue rendered the block unsuitable for tenancy. The long, forced closure of the three businesses and apartments there led A4 Pizza, Area Four’s quirky Somerville sibling, to close for good in November.

“We would like to thank all who have been patiently waiting and appreciate your cooperation and business,” partner Prabhjot Kaur wrote on Facebook. “We look forward to providing the best experience and serving the best quality food that you all love and have been waiting for.”

When he announced his pizzeria’s permanent closure, A4 co-owner Michael Krupp said an underground fire involving Eversource utility wire left the entire building “in a dangerous and altered state, unfit for occupation or business.” At the time, Kaur said her team was determined to remain in their original home, but she noted the utility company “really [has] taken forever to fix this problem.”

This weekend, Dosa-n-Curry has returned with chef and partner Sukhjinder Singh’s full menu, featuring a wide variety of exclusive vegetarian North and South Indian and Indo-Chinese cuisine. The restaurant is known in particular for its dosa, savory crepes made of rice flour, semolina, and lentils, filled with spicy sauces including potato and curry leaf-spiced onion masala; onion, tomato and paneer; and more. Dosa-n-Curry also makes pizza-like rice and lentil upthappam; two dozen different curries; house-baked naan, khulcha, roti, and more. It offers gluten-free and vegan options upon request.

Along with Manjett Verma, Kaur and Singh opened Dosa-n-Curry in 2012. It serves a full lunch buffet daily from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday), and serves dinner nightly from 5-10 p.m. (3:30-10:30 Friday-Sunday). Delivery is available after 5 p.m.
