Forge Baking Company owners Jennifer Park and Tucker Lewis picked the perfect day to debut their newest concept: After a few days of being softly opened, Forge Ice Cream Bar announced in yesterday’s 90 degree heat that it’s now scooping house-made flavors at its Somerville Avenue shop.

The small storefront accommodates about 20 people. That includes at 10 vintage, vinyl stools, in front of a white and gray-marbled, granite counter, overlooking brass fixtures and a stately wood backbar, salvaged from a Charlestown church. The overall vibe of the shop evokes a different time, Park previously told Boston.

“We are hoping to incite the feel of a vintage ice cream shop, with an antique, revitalized dipping cabinet, soda fountain, [and] vintage stools,” she said.

Forge Ice Cream is an extension of the baking company next door. Park and Lewis also own and operate Davis Square’s Diesel and Union Square’s Bloc 11 cafes. But ice cream is their first love: The duo met 20 years ago working at the legendary Herrell’s Ice Cream in Harvard Square.

The new shop offers house-made takes on classic flavors, like coffee, strawberry, malted vanilla, and mint cookies and cream, using Forge Bakery’s confections. The recipes are executed on the vintage Taylor ice cream machine Park and Lewis used at Herrell’s, with ingredients like Intelligentsia espresso, and Valrhona chocolate, Park told Boston.

Check out the opening menu below. A crème brûlée banana split, elevated with house-made marshmallow sauce and strawberry-raspberry compote, is also available this week, as well as an ice cream flight of four mini scoops.

“The menu is definitely going to expand, however we wanted to focus on getting open and doing the things we were doing well before taking on more,” Lewis says. “Our soda fountain is not set up quite yet but certainly something we plan to get going in the coming months. This will be used for some fountain drinks but more notably, we will be running our nitro iced coffee through it to offer a nitro float with vanilla bean ice cream.”

Expect, too, “fun items such as spin-offs on treats like Choco Tacos, all made in-house at Forge Baking Company and Forge Ice Cream Bar,” Park said previously.

This week, Forge Ice Cream is open noon-8 p.m., with a plan to extend the hours soon.
