Pantry, the alternative grocery store which specialized in Blue Apron-style meal kits, has shuttered in Washington Square, Boston Restaurant Talk reported.
Cofounder and CEO Dennis Lasko announced the news in a Facebook post over the weekend. While he didn’t cite a specific reason for the closure, he took the opportunity to thank patrons and friends.
Pantry debuted last spring with a selection of do-it-yourself recipes, kitchenware, and curated wines. Facebook reviews praised the store for its tangible take on services like those provided by Blue Apron and Purple Carrot. It offered pre-portioned meals, with dishes like apricot teriyaki salmon and miso cod. Each recipe, developed by “chief gastronomic officer” and cofounder Amanda Mayo, included step-by-step instructions and photographs. The storefront had around 20 recipes available at a time, and began offering delivery through companies like Instacart last December.
If you’re in search of something to cook tonight, Instacart just widened its delivery reach around Boston. Other meal kit services, such as Boston Burger Company’s BurgaBox and even chef-designed recipes from Just Add Cooking, can also make dinner prep easy.
We’ll have to wait and see what venture moves into the now-vacant Washington Square pantry. Until then, as Lasko put it, “keep cooking.”
