Since he left the Boston Red Sox as a lovable infielder during the 2012 season, Kevin Youkilis has gotten into the beer industry. He and his brother opened Loma Brewing Company in Los Gatos, Calif. in 2016, but Youk is in Boston this week to launch some of his beers for the hometown crowd.
Beginning later this week, two IPAs—the Greek God of Hops, and Appeasement—will be contract brewed and packaged for Loma at Mass. Bay Brewing Co. (the Seaport makers of Harpoon). The Greek God of Hops—an homage to “the Greek God of Walks'” penchant for getting on base—is a 9 percent double IPA, and Appeasement is a fruity, 7 percent American-style IPA.
The Boston Globe reported on the partnership last week, and Youkilis tweeted a video announcement of the Mass. expansion. “We need to take this to a cool town that just loves, loves IPAs,” Youk said in the clip. “Boston, baby. Here we come!”
Harpoon is hyping up the Loma launch today with a scavenger hunt on its Instagram Story. Check it out to win Loma Brewing beers and swag, plus a chance to meet Youkilis himself at the official release party this Thursday, Sept. 6, at Harpoon Brewery.
Also ahead of the official launch, Youk was shopping at the Fenway location of Craft beer Cellar, the franchise shared on Facebook. Phil DiCarlo invited the retired baseball player into his shop, says DiCarlo’s wife and co-owner Jana Wolfova, and Youk took him up on it this morning. Youk bought a saison, Wolfova says.
Loma’s two IPAs hit Boston-area shelves beginning September 6.
