New City Microcreamery Is Expanding into Cambridge

The popular Hudson ice cream makers seem to be hiring in Central Square.

A highly rated Central Mass. ice cream shop is making good on its promise to come closer to Boston. New City Microcreamery, which announced in April it was actively seeking city opportunities, is expanding from Hudson to Cambridge, per a couple of job listings.

New City Microcreamery hosted a hiring day on August 8 for all positions to staff a new Cambridge shop, according to two ads still live this morning on Craigslist. A specific address for the new location isn’t listed, though one of the two ads says “Central Square.” Reached via email this morning, a rep for the ice cream makers declined to elaborate on details.

“We are getting closer to an opening date,” she says. “We are still working on the project and hiring so we aren’t sure when that will be yet.”

Karim El-Gamal, Michael Kasseris, and Jason Kleinerman opened New City Microcreamery on Hudson’s Main Street in 2015. It’s located across the street from their pizzeria, Rail Trail Flatbread Co., and hides a speakeasy cocktail bar behind the ice cream kitchen. The entrepreneurs initially had their sights set on the Boston area, but were enticed west by lower rents. The trio led the charge to invigorate the culinary scene in Hudson’s quaint downtown, where they have been joined by other indie businesses like Medusa Brewing Co. and a boutique called the Haberdash by Amy Lynn Chase of Worcester’s Crompton Collective. Upcoming additions include Cónico, a soon-to-open taqueria by the owners of the award-winning Worcester gastropub, Armsby Abbey.

L’Espalier and Craigie on Main alum Alyssa Lieberman is New City Microcreamery’s executive pastry chef. The Hudson shop scoops dozens of liquid-nitrogen-frozen, house-made flavors, inspired by nostalgic tastes (cannoli, PB banana Fluff, vegan cookies and cream) and creatively crafted with local ingredients (cantaloupe sherbet, fennel pistachio, fresh mint Oreo). It also offers sundaes, floats, and milkshakes; as well as coffee drinks, pastries, and pretty serious breakfast sandwiches.

The restaurant group uses open-book management at its three concepts, meaning that the whole staff is privy to costs and net operating profit. Locally, Juliet, Trade, Bar Mezzana, and Mei Mei have also employed these transparent practices.
