Surreal is the biggest word that comes to mind. The highest mix of horror—who would want to bomb a marathon, which is a great day of joy and community?—combined with thankfulness that my family was OK, combined with the guilty feeling of being pissed off that I didn’t get to finish. The day of the race is the celebration of all the work you’ve done, as opposed to the work itself.
