Have You Caught the Wave?

Maybe you’ve seen it crashing across a cell phone case, or peeking out on ties or socks. Even if you don’t know the artist behind the image, you’re almost certain to be familiar with his iconic woodblock print, known universally as The Great Wave.

One of the most famous works of art in the world, The Great Wave is at the heart of an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA). Hokusai, the 19th-century master who created the print, was beloved by Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cassatt. Today, his work has swept pop culture, cresting this summer in Boston.
