Have You Caught the Wave?

Maybe you’ve seen it crashing across a cell phone case, or peeking out on ties or socks. Even if you don’t know the artist behind the image, you’re almost certain to be familiar with his iconic woodblock print, known universally as The Great Wave.

One of the most famous works of art in the world, The Great Wave is at the heart of an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA). Hokusai, the 19th-century master who created the print, was beloved by Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cassatt. Today, his work has swept pop culture, cresting this summer in Boston.

If you don’t want The Great Wave to pass you by, we’ve got some tips on how to channel this iconic image:

Ink it.

Temporary or permanent, a Great Wave tattoo evokes the power and beauty of nature.

Text it.

OMG! There’s even a Great Wave emoji to bring fine art to your text messages.

Flaunt it.

Roll into Symphony Sushi and grab a spot next to the Wave! You can imagine the fishermen making their way to shore to bring you the perfect spicy tuna roll, or there’s always the sake flight at the Museum’s Bravo restaurant.

Nail it.

Skip the monochrome mani and take inspiration from surf diva Nina Park’s Great Wave-inspired nail art.

Buy it.

Notecards, calendars, iPhone covers, tea cups, socks, jewelry—you name it, you can find it at the MFA Shop.

View it.
