What is Design Excellence? The Boston Society of Architects Weighs In
What is design excellence? There are many subjective aspects to great design, including the distinct spaces and culture created within a building, the beauty of the structure as a crafted object, its technical innovations, or the transformational role that a building plays within the community where it stands.
In 2016, in what is turning out to be Boston’s “Year of the Plan,” Mayor Martin Walsh is reshaping the Boston Redevelopment Authority and its design review process. Major media outlets (including Boston magazine) are expressing strong opinions about recent successes and failures. The question of design excellence has never been more a part of the public dialogue. The Boston Society of Architects/AIA and its allies welcome this discourse and encourage everyone to think about articulating the nature of design excellence, and why it matters.
