There’s nothing like a change of scenery to inspire you to unplug, kick back, and relax. Trade Boston’s glass-walled towers for clapboard Colonials this season by heading to the rolling hills of Vermont, and consider keeping a tally of all the charming bed & breakfasts you pass along the way. The Green Mountain State is chock full of inns to complete a weekend getaway—ahead, find five especially adorable ones.
Lots of Vermont vacationers lay their heads in centuries-old inns with country wallpaper and creaky floors, but Stowe’s Field Guide offers a welcome change of pace. The relatively new boutique hotel was renovated to feel like a modern ski lodge, and it nails it. Instead of leather armchairs and velvet drapes, there’s midcentury modern seating and live-edge headboards. And while the solitude of nature is always nice, Field Guide offers the best of both worlds—it’s nestled in the heart of Stowe, and is still minutes from ski slopes and hiking trails.

A total of 27 rooms in eight stately buildings make up Barrow’s House, a quiet getaway in the Green Mountains. You’ll find tennis courts, a restaurant, a swimming pool, a terrace, outdoor fire pit, and charming gardens on its six acres, not to mention marble accents sourced from the Norcross-West marble quarry in Dorset. Do a weekend trip the right way by ordering a cheese plate for your room upon arrival, then head to the on-site gastropub for a pint of something local.

Made INN Vermont—Burlington
This artsy Burlington inn carved out of a historical Victorian strikes the perfect balance between antique and modern. It’s decked out in contemporary artwork and vintage decor, and brims with eclectic touches. The place is warm, inviting, and decidedly funky all at the same time, offering four one-of-a-kind rooms overlooking Vermont’s largest city. Guests can crack open an art history book in the library, play a board game in the parlor, or, for some real R&R, unwind in one of the designer bathrooms’ soaking tubs.

The Pitcher Inn—Warren
Tucked away in the Mad River Valley, the Pitcher Inn is just across the street from one of Vermont’s most-loved general stores. Inside, the place exudes stylish, rustic comfort, thanks to its chic themed rooms and suites. The Mountain room has woodland murals painted behind the bed and vintage snowshoes tacked onto the walls and ceilings. The School room, meanwhile, draws inspiration from a one-room schoolhouse, and has a slate headboard (with chalk, of course), and a laboratory table for a vanity.

The Grafton Inn—Grafton
Once you check into the Grafton Inn, you won’t want to leave—and, as it turns out, you might not have to. Guests can take yoga classes and book massages on site, swim in the nearby pond, play ping pong in the game room, rent snowshoes and other gear, or dine at one of three restaurants. That’s all if you can bring yourself to leave your room—each of the inn’s 45 rooms, suites, and guest houses brim with historic charm. And if you’re cruising there in your Tesla, there’s charging station waiting for you.
