Ask a Native: Anna Belknap: Maine
ON MAINE SUSTENANCE
I had one of the best meals of my life at Fore Street in Portland. I’m also a huge fan of Muscongus Bay Lobster. You can bring everything yourself – your drink, your salad – and they boil the lobster and steam the clams for you while you sit watching the boats in Round Pond Harbor.
ON THE SEASHORE
I haven’t been to too many Maine beaches, but my favorite is Pemaquid on a cloudy day. The sand is the softest beach sand I have ever felt. I was there for all that rain in summer 2009, and we went there so the kids could run around.
ON HER FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNTS
Anywhere you can see the water. I also hang at North Cottage Coffee in Damariscotta because the bagels are great, and they have a big bucket of toys for my kids. And the Maine Coast Book Shop is a great place to spend a few hours.
ON HER IDEAL HOMETOWN DAY
I’d wake up, take my dad’s motorboat into town with the kids for some coffee, grab a sandwich at Zecchino’s, go for a swim at the lake, pick blueberries at my aunt’s house, hang out with my family and all my cousins, then eat lobster and go to bed at 8 p.m. Wholesome, anyone?
