She looks for adventure around every corner. She danced all night and all the way home. She sings off key but with great spirit.
These are quips and quotes that appear on store walls and inside the designer’s bags, all describing the “Kate Spade girl.” They also describe Kate McGavin. And when she got engaged to Josh MacLean, she wanted a celebration that was fun, playful, and showed off the couple’s great spirit.
From a rehearsal dinner at Cuchi Cuchi (complete with boas and old Hollywood glam) to bridal party sleepover to a wedding day Zumba class, mission accomplished.
“Our ceremony started at 7:30 p.m., our pictures taken before, and many of the traditional elements were omitted because we wanted a longer dance party and celebration,” McGavin explains.
From the attire to linens to flowers, the bride and her groom were inspired by bold elements used in Kate Spade designs (most notably colors, stripes, and bows). The color scheme was navy blue, fuchsia, and gold glitter/sequins.
“Blue is Josh’s favorite color, and fuchsia is my favorite color, so it was the perfect combination for us. The hardest sell was the stripes, or really the striped linens. Josh was really worried about those. It took some convincing, but I got him to trust in my vision,” she says with a laugh. Stripes and bows were found on their invitations, day-of signage, table linens, napkin folds, flowers, groom and groomsman attire, and bridesmaid jewelry and attire.
Here’s a glimpse into this couple’s fashionable big day.
The brides were decked out in matching robes, with the bride standing out in her very own style.
For her “Something Blue” the bride had a heart made from her Poppie’s favorite blue plaid shirt sewn into her wedding dress.
This gorgeous clutch was created by Kate’s mother and was inspired by the Kate Spade License Plate “MR&MRS” clutch.
“I loved my gown!,” says the bride of her Hayley Paige Guindon design. “It was just so full and fun—the perfect dress for spins. At first, I was a little worried about it getting in my way on the dance floor, but it ended up being my best prop or accessory.”
Josh lost his dad at a young age to ALS, so the couple honored him in several ways—they were married on his parents’ anniversary date, he wore his dad’s wedding ring and watch for the wedding, and, in lieu of traditional favors, the couple made a donation to the ALS Foundation for Life.
The couple laid out a basket of flip flops so the crowd could dance the night away without a care in the world.
Self-proclaimed DIY junkies, the bride and her mom spray painted and glittered lanterns for the centerpieces, 160 napkin rings, a photo backdrop, and over 20 frames for various cocktail, favor, and place card signs.
The bold blue stripes and pops of fuschia draped throughout the site created such a fun ambiance, you couldn’t help but smile.
The larger cake was red velvet with cream cheese icing filling, while most of the cupcakes were red velvet, along with a few chocolate with mocha buttercream and some golden with white chocolate mousse.
