It's well-known that the social center of any home is the kitchen. Food
brings people together, signifies celebration, and is a catalyst for
bonding. Moreover, food is an essential need - a need that too many
unfortunate citizens often go without. The Greater Boston Food Bank
distributes approximately 30 million pounds of food and grocery products
to more than 600 member hunger-relief agencies throughout eastern
Massachusetts in a dedicated partnership to end hunger in our region.
The Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England
and one of the largest food banks in the country, feeding more than
320,000 people annually.
The Food Bank's direct service programs include Kids Cafe, an
afterschool meal program for children; Brown Bag, a supplemental
groceries program for families and seniors; Second Helping, a program
that provides perishable and prepared foods donated by caterers, hotels,
academic institutions, and other food service establishments to those in
need; and Perishables, a program that distributes wholesome food near
its expiration date to Boston Housing Authority residents.
The Greater Boston Food Bank is currently seeking volunteers to conduct
2008 Design Home house tours. Approximately 16,000 volunteers donate
their time to The Food Bank each year, and all ticket proceeds from the
2008 Design Home house tours will benefit The Food Bank. For more
