50 Best Restaurants: Citizen Public House and Oyster Bar

Chef Brian Reyelt of Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar, one of this year’s 50 Best Restaurants, does a lot of things well: Suckling pig roasts for 10 people. Grilled clams with jalapeno butter. Confit duck leg with smoked sausage, white bean cassoulet, and cranberry glaze. (I had this hearty dish last winter and adored it, so I’m thrilled to see it back on the menu now that the weather has turned chilly.)

So it’s safe to assume the guy’s also got some great knife skills. And he’ll be showing them off tomorrow at West Elm (yes, the furniture store) in Fenway from 12 to 2 p.m. He’ll be there to help promote New York-based knife makers Jordan and Jared Schmidt, known as the Schmidt Brothers, who are launching a line of cutlery, knife blocks, and cutting boards. In addition to showing off his chop ‘n’ dice prowess, Reyelt will serve up Thanksgiving-themed nibbles like a root vegetable chopped salad, roast turkey Wellington, and “The Day After” aka an omelet made using Turkey Day leftovers.

I have to say, the old-school-looking, wood-handled knives seem pretty great. And at $180 for a 15-piece set, they’re pretty darn affordable. So they’ve found a good promo guy in Reyelt, whose $38-per-person pig roast — which includes oysters, clams, and a pile of seasonal sides — just might be the best deal in town.
