Glossed Over

You’ve spent hours obsessing over the perfect lip color. Now make it stick.

THE WEEK BEFORE

Brookline-based makeup artist Coco Grace recommends exfoliating your lips nightly with a damp washcloth; follow with a rich salve like Malin + Goetz Lip Moisturizer ($12, Barneys New York, Copley Place, Boston, 617-385-3300, barneys.com).

THE NIGHT BEFORE

Applying extra balm the night before is a must, says Shu Uemura makeup guru Dani Wagener—especially if you’ve had wine at the rehearsal dinner. (Booze dehydrates all of you.) Moisturized lips will hold lip color better than cracked, flaky ones.

THE DAY OF

Don’t layer heavy gloss under lipstick—the excess emollients can make color smudge and disappear. But don’t go overboard with long-wear products, either; they can dry out lips. Start by using a soft liner, then apply a pigment-packed lipstick like Chanel Hydrabase Crème Lipstick ($27, Saks Fifth Avenue, Prudential Center, Boston, 617-262-8500, saksfifthavenue.com). And remember: With all the kissing and eating you’ll do, no lip color will last all day.
