For years, design buffs Brent Refsland and Nick Siemaska had longed to open a shop showcasing well-made modern furniture. That dream finally became a reality last fall, when the two friends joined forces with collector Eric Portnoy to launch home store Room 68 in the space next to Refsland’s Jamaica Plain art gallery. With unique pieces crafted by emerging designers from Boston and beyond, the store is “about being passionate about what you live with,” Portnoy says.

“This is some of the best organic modern design that we’ve come across,” Siemaska says of Matter Design’s Ply shelving ($850–$1,100).

Boston-based architect and designer Susana DeVoe of MakeGood Studio crafted these accent pillows ($75 each) from pleated quilt bindings.

6. LOCAL FLAVOR

South End designer Debra Folz’s Whole Story photo albums make a sentimental item “more exciting by adding a sculptural effect,” Refsland says.
