Convicted gangster and longtime Boston magazine subscriber James “Whitey” Bulger was disciplined at a Florida prison for pleasuring himself.

According to a prison disciplinary report obtained by the Globe, a male corrections officer at the U.S. Penitentiary Coleman II in Sumterville, Florida, observed the former Southie crime lord masturbating while alone in his cell with the lights on. Bulger claims he was only applying medicated fungicidal powder to a rash on his genitals, a condition he was too ashamed to bring to the female nurses’ attention.

“I’ve never had any charges like that in my whole life,” Bulger said in a disciplinary hearing in June. “I’m 85 years old. My sex life is over.” He later said he was being “set-up” and offered to take a polygraph test to prove it.

As for the lights, Bulger said he keeps them on at all times to help him cope with the lingering effects of his participation in Project MK Ultra, in which inmates were injected with LSD at the request of the CIA, in exchange for shorter sentences, in order to develop mind-control weaponry.

“I sleep with the lights on 24 hours a day because I have psychological problems (horrible nightmares) due to my being on a medical project called MK-Ultra,” Bulger said. “Until 1979, I thought I was insane.”

Though Bulger has appealed the decision, the Globe reports, he was already served his punishment: 30 days of solitary confinement, as well as 120 days without his commissary and e-mail privileges. Bulger is currently serving a life sentence for his role in 11 murders.
