Drink This Now: An Aged Barleywine by Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project

A small bar in Boston has tapped a cellared keg of Our Finest Regards.

It was just about a year ago that Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project left the Boston beer scene. Since then, the quirky beers from co-owners Dann and Martha Paquette have faded from store shelves and draft lines.

Well, until now.

Vee Vee, an incomparable neighborhood restaurant in Jamaica Plain, just tapped a keg of the brewery’s barleywine-style ale, Our Finest Regards. The restaurant has been aging the high-ABV beer in its cellar for two years, they shared on social media. The restaurant opens at 5 p.m. today, so no one was immediately available to confirm how much is available, but we’d assume there’s not much to go around. At least it’s in good company.

Given the frequency with which Vee Vee carried Pretty Things during its heyday, it seems fitting the restaurant held on to a keg. Just make sure you arrive before the place floods with other grief-stricken drinkers looking to relive the glory days. Who knows when, if ever, you’ll have another chance to drink a Pretty Things beer?

It’s an exciting (albeit, fleeting) reminder of the Paquettes’ local prominence. Alas, the two have been largely silent since debuting a new beer overseas a few months back. The brewing company’s Twitter account (where they’re normally most active) has been silent since September, and its website hasn’t been changed since it was updated with a farewell letter in June.

“As hundreds of you witnessed last December, we tucked Jack D’Or up in his coffin (his habitual sleeping place) and packed our bags, leaving Boston behind us at least for a while,” the Paquettes wrote online. “We are traveling the world in pursuit of who-knows-what, but we will promise you this: We will always be dedicated to better beer, and better beer only.”

Let’s hope we someday see the return of that lovable grain of barely. In the meantime, drink up at Vee Vee.
