Edible Events: Fall Fun Edition

October isn’t just about costumes, sweets and revelry. All around the city, restaurants and communities are taking advantage of our current culinary bounty: countless varieties of heirloom pumpkins and squash, rich braised meats, and hearty ales perfect for cool nights. Here are just a few of the events to herald in the changing of the leaves.
Slumbrew’s Ball D’Ville
Somerville Brewing Company is celebrating its one year anniversary this Friday with a party at the Armory. Wear your swankiest attire and enjoy music from Steampunk favorite Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band. Be the first to sample Slumbrew’s newest, “Attic and Eaves,” a limited-release toasted brown ale along with other tasty selections from their lineup. The price of admission includes a commemorative glass and small bites provided by Redbones, Boston Burger Company, Pescatore and other Somerville favorites. All proceeds benefit local charities and businesses.

Upstairs on the Square Food Day Celebration
Food Day on October 24th, is a nationwide movement dedicated to raising awareness for healthy, affordable and sustainable food. To celebrate, Cambridge’s Upstairs on the Square is partnering with Kimball Farm to create a seasonal prix fix menu that includes a warm squash and Sugar Pumpkin salad with Pink Lady cider vinaigrette, Buttermilk poached cod with toasted kale and Hakurei Turnips, and apple cider donut holes. Do your part for this important cause by attending chef Susan Regis’s inspired farm-to-table event. Reservations are encouraged as these dishes will only be around for a few short days.

No. 9 Park’s Absinthe-Themed Masquerade Ball
Chef Barbara Lynch’s flagship restaurant, No. 9 Park, will celebrate Halloween with fanciful masks, creative black tie and the unmistakable aroma of anise. Their second annual Masquerade Ball is an absinthe-themed soirée that includes classic French hors d’oeuvres and stationary dining (think charcuterie, a tartare bar, roast chicken, and crêpes suzette), seasonal cocktails, an absinthe fountain, live music and entertainment and a few surprise treats.

ONCE de Los Muertos II
Celebrate Dia de los Muertos in Somerville with the gypsy chefs of Cuisine en Locale. Work off that candy hangover with an all you can eat “MassMex” feast featuring Taza chocolate chicken mole, tomatillo pork verde from nearby Stillman Farm, handmade tortillas, corn paletas from Ocean Ave Pops, Slumbrew cerveza and other locavore delicacies. Hit the dance floor with Mariachi Estampa de America and make sure to wear your best spooky duds or luchador-inspired costume for prizes provided by Kitchensurfing. All proceeds go to local farms and producers.

The Gingerbread House Competition at the Annual Boston Christmas Festival
There’s no better way to conjure the holiday spirit than the annual Gingerbread House Competition at Boston’s Christmas Festival taking place November 2nd-4th . Top chefs from area restaurants, bakeries and culinary schools, including No.9 Park, Bokx 109 and Finale Desserts, create gingerbread masterpieces to be judged by a celebrity panel. The houses are then sold with proceeds benefiting Housing Families, Inc. – a non-profit organization dedicated to ending family homelessness in Massachusetts. Also, get a leg up on your Christmas shopping by visiting the over 350 artisans selling gourmet foods, home décor, toys and other quirky hand-crafted gifts.
