Little Donkey Debuts Weekday Breakfast
Stuck in a breakfast rut? Seek inspiration at Little Donkey. Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonnette’s eclectic new spot in Central Square debuted its daily breakfast program this morning with pastries and coffee. The full opening menu drops Wednesday, August 24.
Breakfast has always been in the business plan. It’s part of where the restaurant gets its name (no, Little Donkey does not currently serve burritos). Little Donkey is named for the “unassuming workhorse of the animal kingdom,” the duo previously told Boston. That means it provides for Central’s commuters, students, visitors, workers, etc., with a wide-ranging menu, as well as all-day service.
Taking inspiration from the seasons and cultural diversity, the spread will not look like many other American breakfasts, Bissonnette said. Expect things like a hearty Jerusalem bowl, plum toast, seasonal fruit and yogurt, miso banana bread toad-in-the-hole, a pastrami and egg sandwich, a spicy chickpea and tomato stew.
The team doesn’t have a dedicated pastry chef, and the baked goods that debuted today are a collaborative effort. Oringer said.
“Jamie and I love French pastries, and we’re looking at original Jacques Pepin books and other ’80s French cookbooks” for inspiration, he said. “The Cambridge farmers market is around the corner. It would be nice to be able to say we’ll make a chamomile and wild blueberry muffin.”
Fazenda Coffee is fueling the espresso program. Little Donkey serves breakfast Monday-Friday from 8-11 a.m. Weekend brunch will start the first weekend in September.
