There’s a New Temporary Memorial to Officer Sean Collier

Six months after his death, the Officer Collier Memorial Committee unveiled a temporary stone memorial to honor officer Sean Collier at the corners of Main St. and Vassar St. in Cambridge. The plaque is carved from limestone from MIT’s Great Dome, reports Boston.com, and it shows the MIT Police shoulder patch and Collier’s badge number. Here it is, photographed by WBZ:

The committee held a ceremony at 7:30 a.m. to lay the flowers and flags by the site. At 10:20 p.m., the time of his death on April 18, they will hold a candlelight vigil to remember him, also at the corner of Main and Vassar, MIT police said in a statement on the department website.

Collier was allegedly killed in a confrontation with the Tsarnaev brothers as they attempted to flee the area. He’s since been honored with a posthumous appointment to the Somerville police force. Photographs of Collier dotted the makeshift memorial near the Marathon finish line in the months after the attack, and well-wishers left flowers and other gifts outside the MIT police headquarters, which remained for months, too. This stone offers a more permanent way to commemorate him until a permanent memorial can be erected.
