GREAT HEIGHTS
Red Bull Flugtag

In an event sponsored by Red Bull, competitors will pilot homemade high-flying machines. After following a 30-foot runway, the contraptions will launch into the air, aim for the longest flight possible, and then land into the Charles River. It’s primarily for entertainment, as a lot of machines rarely make air at all. Both laughter and cheering are encouraged.

Saturday, August 20, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Hatch Shell, 47 David G. Mugar Way, Boston, redbullflugtag.com

TUNE UP
Salem Jazz & Soul Festival

The shorefront Salem Willows park will be transformed into a beat junkie’s paradise for two days. This festival hosts bands with style ranging from a high school group to local hot shots Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers. With the end-of-summer event being popular, parking may be tough. Pro tip: take advantage of the festival’s $25 Uber discount or the Salem Trolley.

August 20-21, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Salem Willows, 167 Fort Ave., salemjazzsoul.org
