Mayor Menino Vows to Block Chick-fil-A — or Whatever the Hell the Name Is. Menino is promising to pull a Walmart on Chick-fil-A’s plans to set up shop in Boston unless “they open up their policies,” which are more like the practices of serving (gross) chicken sammies and (delicious) waffle fries alongside anti-gay comments like these. “Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston,” Menino told the Herald. “You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population. We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion. That’s the Freedom Trail. That’s where it all started right here. And we’re not going to have a company, Chick-fil-A or whatever the hell the name is, on our Freedom Trail.” [Herald]

Somerville Woman Survives Ferry Sinking Off Tanzanian Coast. The MV Skagit sank on Wednesday after hitting strong winds, killing at least 31 passengers and leaving more than 100 missing. Hilary Strasburger, 26, called her mother with the following report:

“She was on the top level of the ferry inside and she felt the boat tip over and tried to go out a door but she couldn’t get it open, I think she said there was too much water pressure, and someone pushed out a window and she and her friend climbed out the window and were in the water … And I don’t know how long she was in the water … she managed to get to a life raft where she and her friend were in the life raft for two hours and a rescue boat came.” [AP]
