Break out the sweatpants or ditch the belt, because National Doughnut Day 2016 is Friday, June 3.

We encourage celebrating your favorite foods every day, but the origin for this tasty holiday can actually be traced all the way back to 1938. The Salvation Army created the holiday that year to honor the women who distributed doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The United States has celebrated these wonderful, doughy rings on the first Friday in June every year since.

Plenty of the area’s bakeries and shops are participating by offering deals—including some free doughnuts!—so there are no excuses to glaze over the festivities this year. Raise a massive round of fried dough to these specials happening at a bakery near you.

Blackbird Doughnuts

Blackbird is debuting three new flavors on Friday: “funfetti” vanilla bean, a dense chocolate cookies n’ cream, and peanut butter mousse Bismarck with peach jam filling. The shop’s regular flavors will also be on hand; feel free to call ahead and reserve your dozen. Or, go big: Blackbird is partnering with Gilt City to offer two different promotions, including a huge “doughnut hero” for 100 doughnuts, plus delivery anywhere in Boston.

Dunkin’ Donuts

Dunks is offering any of its 20-something classic doughnuts for free, with the purchase of any drink (including its new candy-flavored coffees). Doughnuts in that tier include glazed chocolate cake, jelly-filled, and Boston creme, among others. If you feel compelled to share your sugary triumphs on social media, the doughnut shop will also have special Snapchat filters available on Friday when you’re near a store.

The Sinclair

Chef Keenan Langlois’s “WaffOnut” isn’t exactly a doughnut, but we’ll allow it. The deep-fried monstrosity used to be an off-menu item reserved for performers playing at the venue next door, but it’s now a mainstay on the menu, just in time for Doughnut Day. If a chocolate-covered doughnut waffle isn’t enough sugar for you, the WaffOnut is also available in sundae form, loaded with sprinkles, chocolate glaze, and vanilla bean ice cream.

Rosebud American Kitchen and Bar

Have you ever had an exceptional idea for a doughnut flavor? Rosebud wants to hear it. Beginning on National Doughnut Day and running through June 10, doughnut lovers have the chance to suggest a new flavor for the restaurant. Fans can vote for their favorite from June 11-15, and four finalists will all receive a $100 gift card. The best new doughnut flavor will not only debut at Rosebrunch, but its creator will get free doughnuts for a year.

Union Square Donuts

On top of free espresso, a live DJ, and an Instagram photo contest, Union Square Donuts is also launching a few new treats in light of the festivities. Blueberry jam doughnuts will make their seasonal comeback, a brand new apple fritter will debut, and a new Vietnamese coffee glazed “Doughie” will also be available. Stop by one of Union Square’s two—sorry, Brookline, not yet—locations in Somerville and at Boston Public Market and treat yourself.
