Can you even have a Boston movie without a bunch of foul-mouthed, gun-totting gangsters? Apparently the answer is no.

The first trailer for director and writer Ben Wheatley’s new action comedy Free Fire was released on Friday following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The upcoming movie, starring Academy Award winner Brie Larson, chronicles the tale of an illegal firearms sale gone awry in 1978 Boston.

Free Fire also features actor Armie Hammer as a bearded negotiator named Ord and Cilian Murphy as an Irish Republican Army member. Meanwhile, District 9 and The Hollars actor Sharlto Copley plays a hot-tempered arms dealer.

Martin Scorsese, who won a Best Director Oscar for The Departed , is attached to the project as an executive producer, which probably explains all of the bullets and f-bombs.

Although Free Fire has a pretty talented cast and crew, critics had mixed reactions to the film after it premiered in Toronto this week. The Hollywood Reporter‘s review called Free Fire a “scattershot exercise in genre homage that ultimately misses the target,” while Variety‘s assessment was a bit kinder, calling it a “virtuoso feat of indiscriminate gunplay.”
