Store Opening: Athenaeum

By: Hannah Sheinberg

We’ve always wished we were sick skateboarders. And with the recent opening of couture skate and longboard store Athenaeum’s second location in Hingham’s Derby Street Shoppes, our pipe dream might just turn into a reality — especially with the newly-opened Bare Cove skate park up the street. Snow definitely presents a challenge, but that’s what snowskates are for, and Athenaeum has those, too.

Athenaeum offers brands that have previously been available online only, including Zoo York and Orangatang, along with a selection of hardware for customized boards. If you’re a skating neophyte (or just looking for pointers), pro riders frequently hold clinics in the store, and pro skater Dane Webber of Loaded Boards co-manages the shop.

Even if you’re not in the market for a new deck, the shop prides itself on creating an environment where you and your friends can just hang out, with internet lounges, art galleries, video game consoles, and flat-screen TVs. The company plans to expand across the country, opening stores in California, Colorado, and Florida, but Bostonians will always be able to brag that the movement began here.
