Chappaquiddick or “Chappy”, an island off the eastern corner of Martha’s Vineyard, is home to many seaside landscapes and The Royal & Ancient Chappaquiddick Links, a nine-hole golf course cut from the land more than 100 years ago. Down a sandy road adjacent to the course, “Chappy’s Big Camp” is a 3.18-acre compound consisting of two homes, outbuildings, a private beach, and a deep water dock. As for its history, the Vineyard Gazette reports that Boston dentist, Dr. Frank Marshall, built the Big Camp house for his bride in 1906 and later developed the golf course. The main house faces the ocean, with two bedrooms and a stone wrap-around porch. The smaller is a one-bedroom bungalow located nearby. While the golf course has recently changed hands, it’s protected from development because of a conservation restriction. Proposed plans for the Big Camp are by Breese Architects and include the building of an additional house and a pool on the grounds.
