When architect Richard Bradford first custom designed the distinctive triangular dormers on this home, he installed just four. When he saw how good they looked, though, he decided to spring for four more, and thus was born the quirky cabin that stands today. Built with cedar shingles and a metal roof, the ranch-style home is one of five 800-square-foot cottages that will form a still-under-construction community in Southwest Harbor, a small town on the southern side of Maine’s Mount Desert Island.

The sub-1,000-square-foot domicile makes the most of its size with vaulted ceilings striped with hemlock beams and wide, custom-milled pine flooring that makes each room feel roomier. But the design choices aren’t all based on form and function—several accents are there just for fun. The sleeping loft above the main living area, for instance, sports a railing with wavy spindles and a hardwood floor finished à la Jackson Pollock (covered in splatter paint). The starburst-style light with conical shades that illuminates the area below is another playful fixture, splaying out between the kitchen and couch and uniting the two zones from above.

The only difficult part about viewing this adorable island home is that—from the olive green cabinets and the bright red couch, to the shiplap pine walls—it’s already perfectly put together. The good news? For $460,000 it can all be yours, furniture included.
