Monadnock Retreat

What were your inspirations for this project, and how did they align with the homeowner’s goals?

Embracing the natural beauty of the site and capturing the sweeping panoramic views out to Mount Monadnock was imperative and served as inspiration throughout. In a minimal way, the home needed to embrace those views, provide an inviting and relaxed environment, and be built to withstand the elements of the region. The home was thoughtfully designed with both warm and industrial materials to bring the homeowner’s aesthetic to life throughout. The combination of mahogany windows and doors, western red cedar siding, polished concrete floors, and corrugated metal siding creates a palette of durability with comfort. These material choices and site specificity successfully addressed the homeowner’s goals, respecting the site and their individuality.

Why do you love this project?

I love how this project integrates with the landscape and has a presence perched atop the hill. It was carefully placed between existing trees that are then incorporated into shading and filtered views. The balance of rough and refined materials and details also appeals to me, creating a feeling of resilience with warmth and comfort. An interesting detail was the homeowner’s choice to leave imprints of fallen leaves on their concrete floors. I’m also especially proud of the use of our own manufactured mahogany windows and doors, and the way they beautifully frame and highlight the views.
