If you’ve thought about getting out there for one last trip before winter arrives, this might be your best car-free, bet.

Amtrak has announced a surprise 50-percent-off “fall getaway” flash sale for most of the service’s destinations nationwide.

So that means you could bypass the traffic with a one-way ticket from Boston to Philadelphia or New York City for $39, to New Haven for $29, or to Washington, D.C. for $58.

The only catch is you’ve got to book tickets either Tuesday, October 22 or Wednesday, October 23, so if you’re the spontaneous type, now’s the time to recruit travel companions.

Trips have to be booked between November 11-29, excluding November 26-27 (so, no, you can’t get home for Thanksgiving this way, unless you go early or day of). Amtrak has also said these lines are off-limits for the deal: Auto Train, Pennsylvanian and Keystone Service (locally between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania), Capitol Corridor, Hiawatha, Pacific Surfliner and 7000-8999 Thruways.”

“Now’s your chance to double the adventure for half the price,” Amtrak writes on its website. “Pop home for a weekend visit, reunite with friends or finally get to cross that one trip off your bucket list. There are so many excuses to go that it would be wild to stay.”

Not since the Commuter Rail’s $10 weekend pass has a deal on train rides offered such a good excuse for a getaway.
