Getting Fresh

YOU DON’T ACTUALLY have to stay on a farm to experience produce and ingredients that are (ahem) outstanding in their fields. Some of the area’s poshest resorts are serious about using the freshest locally grown fare.

Red Lion Inn
Revered across New England for his commitment to local foods, chef Brian Alberg regularly updates the inn’s menus to reflect the season’s harvest. His one-of-a-kind “sustainable foods menu” is available on Sundays and Mondays; a “sustainable breakfast” is served daily. Try the “Blue Moon” mushroom hash, made with shiitake and oyster mushrooms and two local, organic poached eggs. >> 30 Main St., Stockbridge, MA, 413-298-5545, redlioninn.com.

Omni Mount Washington Hotel
Breakfasts at this grand hotel have always been legendary — and now they’re even more so, thanks to Mount Cabot maple syrup. Sugarmakers Biff Wyman and Carl Lindquist create their single-source, organic variety using a wood-fired evaporator. The result: an out-of-this-world maple flavor. More waffles, anyone? >> Route 302, Bretton Woods, NH, 603-278-1000, omnimountwashingtonresort.com.

Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa

Originally a family farm dating back to 1865, the Mountain View Grand has recently revived its 40-acre smallholding, home to several endangered farm-animal breeds as well as more-common horses, chickens, and cattle. Venture down to collect eggs for the chef, or pick up some “Farm Blend” yarn — made on site from the fleece of sheep, goats, llamas, alpaca, and Angora rabbits. >> Mountain View Road, Whitefield, NH, 866-484-3843, mountainviewgrand.com.

Blantyre
Blantyre’s romantic Berkshires setting is only enhanced by perfect pairings of wine and cheese. The menu here offers at least seven rare cheeses from across New England. Recommended is Rawson Brook Farm’s Monterey Chèvre: Creamy and fresh with a zesty aftertaste, it’s made down the road in Monterey, Massachusetts. >> 16 Blantyre Rd., Lenox, MA, 413-637-3556, blantyre.com.

Ocean House
This newly renovated resort keeps a “food forager” on staff who acts as the liaison to local farmers and leads guests on educational field trips to area farms. No time? The gift shop offers gourmet items such as Pelloni Farm’s jam, made in tiny batches from fruit picked at the peak of ripeness. >> One Bluff Ave., Watch Hill, Westerly, RI, 401-584-7000, oceanhouseri.com.
