Mitt and Mr. Jones

Once again, this has been quite the interesting week for Mitt Romney. After a very public calling-out from one-time friend Larry Craig, Romney now has a new guy in his corner: Controversial Evangelical leader, and dismisser of Mormons, Bob Jones III, who has endorsed Romney for president.

The former president of Bob Jones University, Bob Jones III hasn’t been shy about railing against the Mormon faith, or anyone else who doesn’t conform to his view of Christianity. He posted his anti-Mormon screed on the BJU website in 2000 not once, but twice:

The diminution of evangelistic enterprise to cults which call themselves Christian, including Catholicism and Mormonism, is frightening. . .

Mitt’s devotion to his “cult” resulted in near death while serving as a missionary in France. Will Romney just ignore Jones’ views just to possibly win over a few voters?

You bet he will.

“We have the same things we want to fight for on issue after issue, so I’m happy to have his support.”

Well, that much is true. In an interview with the Washington Post, Jones III rails against many of the same evils as Romney.

“Homosexuality is a sin — cut and dried, no question about it,” [Jones] says. “It’s as plain as the nose on your face in the Bible.”

Ah, we get it now. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Especially if they can get the votes.
