Connecticut Ranked Worst State for Road Trips

If you planned on avoiding all the chaos at Logan and hitting the open road this summer, it might behoove you to take a detour when you reach the Nutmeg State.

Connecticut was ranked the worst state in America for road trips, according to a new report by the personal finance social network WalletHub. Massachusetts ranked the highest of the New England states at No. 19, followed by New Hampshire (21), Maine (28), Vermont (33), and Rhode Island (43).

To compile its ranking, WalletHub compared all 50 states using 20 metrics across three dimensions: driving and lodging costs (average gas prices, maximum toll costs, lowest price of a three-star hotel), road conditions and safety (vehicle miles traveled per capita, quality of roads and bridges, number of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled), and fun and scenic attractions (number of attractions and nightlife options, accommodation and food services establishments per 1,000 residents).

Connecticut tied Delaware for the fewest scenic byways. Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire ranked 1-2-3 for the fewest car thefts per capita, while Connecticut was found to have the highest camping costs. While New Hampshire had the second-lowest average cost for car repairs, Massachusetts had the second-highest. Rhode Island and Massachusetts ranked at the top of the most National Park units per square mile.

Oregon took top honors, followed by Nevada, Minnesota, Washington, and Ohio. You can check out WalletHub’s full ranking here.
