Peek Inside the New Target in Cambridge
Cambridge residents are about to have a lot more big box options within walking distance. A brand new Target is opening in Central Square.
“You have definitely hit a bullseye with this location,” Cambridge Mayor Denise Simmons said at the ribbon cutting ceremony of the new store Tuesday evening.
Though the official grand opening is not until this Sunday, a few Cantabrigians wandered into the ribbon cutting ceremony last night to marvel at the 2-story, 21,000 square-foot store on Massachusetts Avenue and sample dumplings, cookies, and crackers.
The slightly smaller (or “city-sized”) branch still features almost everything a regular Target has: clothing, a grocery section, beauty supplies, household goods, and tech, toys and sports equipment, as well as both self-checkout and staffed registers. There is no pharmacy, however.
Vice Mayor Marc McGovern, a Cambridge native, expressed how important he thought it was that a stop-and-shop marketplace had returned to Cambridge.
“It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to buy socks and underwear for my kids in Central Square,” McGovern said, and cited that in addition to providing a place to shop, the new Target provided a place to work, and had hired 40 Cambridge residents to help staff it.
“I’m looking forward to a great and long relationship with Target and the city of Cambridge,” McGovern said.
Target at Central Square is located at 564 Mass. Ave. and officially opens this Sunday at 8 a.m. Reusable shopping bags will be distributed to the first 1,000 shoppers.
