Best of the Day: The Big Lebowski Screenings – August 17, 2015

Check out these two Lebowski-themed events, one at a movie theater and one in a bowling alley.

Welcome to Best of the Day, our daily recommendation for what to check out around town. If you do one thing in Boston today, consider this.

The Big Lewbowski

Film still from The Big Lewbowski

By some strange coincidence, the Dude abides in two places in Boston today. Since its release in 1998, the Coen brothers’ film The Big Lebowski has accumulated a following of devoted fans. Known for its all-star cast (including BU alum Julianne Moore) and ever-quotable stoner jokes, the movie is a true classic. So whether you’re a Big Lebowski fanatic or you just really like bowling, White Russians (or “Caucasians”), and quality rugs, consider leaving the house tonight to check out these simultaneous Duderino-themed events. But you can keep the bathrobe on.

The Annual Big Lebowski Bowling Party

Each summer, the Coolidge Corner Theatre hosts a Big Lebowski-themed party, featuring bowling (duh), trivia, and a costume contest, followed by a special screening of the cult sensation. As a bonus, OTTO’s across the street will be holding a pre-show pizza fundraiser to benefit the Coolidge. From 5-7 p.m., embrace your inner slacker and grab a slice before settling in for 117 minutes of signature Coen weirdness.

August 17, show starts at 7 p.m., $11.25, Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline, 617-734-2501, coolidge.org.

The Dude Imbibes: An Interactive Movie & Cocktail Experience

In the religion of Dudeism, Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski is the Messiah, the bowling alley is the place of worship, and the White Russian is the nectar of the gods. Revel in all three at this all-encompassing screening event: one ticket gets you a night of bowling, costumes, a live-action shadowcast of the film (think Rocky Horror), and several thematic cocktails.

August 17, bowling starts at 7:30 p.m., Show starts at 9 p.m., $50-$60, Lanes & Games, 195 Concord Turnpike, Cambridge, 617-876-5533, bit.ly/dudetickets.
