Today is a historic day in Boston: the massive snow pile from last winter is officially gone.

Boston announced on Tuesday that the final remnants of the 70 foot snow pile had melted away and all that remains in the South Boston lot is a disgusting pile of trash. The city announced a contest in late June that asked residents to submit guesses as to when the pile would finally disappear.

The Tide Street pile was the largest of the several snow farms set up around the city during the unprecedented winter. All of the other snow farm piles have long since melted away. The process of trucking snow to vacant lots around the city as part of the snow removal process is not unusual but the scale of this pile was.
