On the Market: An Elm Street Dream in Dedham
There’s nothing nightmarish about this Elm Street home, which is a stunningly designed 2019 construction.
24 Elm St., Dedham
Size: 3,890 square feet
It seems like every Massachusetts town has an Elm Street of its own. And this Dedham dwelling, positioned at the center of a horseshoe driveway, might appear to be interchangeable with many other suburban homes at first glance. But if the fancy car parked outside isn’t enough to clue you in, step up to the front door.
Mahogany planks line the ceiling of the covered front porch, which opens into an entry hall paved with Moroccan tiles. The main floor exhibits an impressive open layout, with herringbone plank tiling jazzing up the entire floor, and lighter pine boards cleverly delineating the living room from the kitchen and dining room.
Interrupting the continuous floor plan is one of the home’s most striking features: A custom floating staircase made of glass and steel was carefully assembled in the home. At night, the glass panes can cast a shimmery glow around the rooms.
The kitchen is subtly cordoned off in another way, too: A rectangle of Fir wood adorns the ceiling, sealed with a clear varnish for easy cleaning. A curved island looks more like a swanky bar than an everyday prep area, with Taj Mahal quartzite counters and an intricately tiled base.
Heaps of light pour into the room through sliding glass doors that lead out onto a vast deck, equipped with its own kind of kitchen—a grill built into a granite-topped workspace is ideal for cooking up an open air feast, and an interior and exterior Sonos surround sound hookup lets you keep listening to music as you flow between the eat-in and the eat-out. After the barbecued dinner, bring your chair down onto the lower deck, where a remote-controlled gas fire pit can roast your marshmallow to the perfect golden crisp.
